Grief is a normal response to loss – any loss. It could be the loss of a loved one, a pet, a relationship, a job, or even a dream. If you have experienced loss, then you likely are well acquainted with grief. While it is natural and normal, all too often our first response is to try to stop the grief or deny it. This is a grave mistake. These tips will help you cope better.

Own Your Grief

Trying to ignore the fact that you are grieving will not help you heal. In fact, it will leave lasting, deep scars that may never heal. You must face it, acknowledge it, and own it. No one else can do that or define it for you. It takes as long as it takes, you may experience many different emotions, you may cry or you might not, and your grief is valid even if no one else understands it. Accept it for what it is and don’t try to hide it.

Talk it Out

Talking to a friend, family member, or a counselor can help you sort out your feelings and help you find healthy ways to grieve. It can also be integral to the healing process. If you can find someone to spend time with in real life that could be beneficial. However, if you can only connect with them online, that can work too. Use a messaging platform that allows video chat so you can at least see them while you are talking. A support group may also be helpful.

Write a Memoir or Journal

Creative pursuits are a common way that many people work through their grief. Write about what you are feeling, your loss, and your memories in a journal. If it is a person you are mourning, say those things that you never said. Just write about whatever comes to mind. In some cases, you might want to turn your journal into a book. Amazon’s KDP service allows you to print your books on demand for free.

Take Care of Yourself

Grief can be hard on the body so make sure that you are taking care of yourself. Eat, bathe, get some exercise, and get good quality sleep. Showing yourself some love will help you heal faster. Some people crumble under the weight of grief, but you still have to do certain things, and taking care of yourself is at the top of the list.
