According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 11% of all children will be diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).  One of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders, ADHD is characterized by inattentiveness, impulsivity and/or hyperactivity.  While diagnosing the disorder is a multi-step processed, the first line of treatment in many school-aged children is stimulant-based medication.  In many cases, this medication can be habit forming and cause a variety of side effects that are more troublesome than the symptoms of ADHD.  For those who wish to reduce the amount of medication their child is exposed to, they are left with behavioral therapy as a possible treatment with no real advice as to how to address the underlying physical cause of the disorder.

Chiropractic Treats ADHD at its Source

When you consider that chiropractic care treats neurological disorders by removing skeletal interference, it is easy to see how regular chiropractic care would help a child with ADHD reduce the severity of their symptoms.  When the neurological system in the brain and spine are operating the way they should, the child experiences clear thought processes, an ability to concentrate, and even a reduction in hyperactivity – without habit forming stimulants.

Neurofeedback Addresses Brain Activity

Neurofeedback is the process of changing timing and activation patterns in the brain. This non-invasive processes uses a sensor to monitor brainwaves which are then sent to a computer that can process vast amounts of information.  When that activity is outside of normal limits, the computer notifies the patient who can then make adjustments to their thought process and concentration and bring them back to normal limits.  The patient may be playing a video game or watching a movie, but when the mind starts to wander visual cues help the patient make physical and concentration adjustments.  Rather than forcing the brain to chemically react to medication, neurofeedback trains the brain to react the way it should.

Even though ADHD may continue into adulthood, arming our children with the tools to manage their symptoms without relying on habit-forming drugs gives them power over their condition.  For more information or to discuss your child’s case, contact our office or Schedule a Brain Map and Consultation Online.
