With the advent of spring comes the need to do things we don’t normally do. We scrub walls, cleannutrition for spring out flower beds, and wash windows in an effort to get rid of the last of winter and welcome the rebirth of spring. Even though we didn’t have much of a winter, spring is an ideal time to do the same thing to your diet. Beautiful produce is becoming more abundant, local farmers bring beautiful spring vegetables to market, and the promise of sun-kissed fruit is in the air. However, many of us are as overwhelmed by spring cleaning our diet as we are about spring cleaning our home. Where do you start?

  1. Eat with the Season
Spring time brings with it strawberries, asparagus, ramps, artichokes, fennel, and spring onions. Even if you have never cooked an artichoke before or have no idea how to use fennel, incorporating one new vegetable or fruit into your diet can help you get the essential vitamins and minerals you may have been missing in your winter diet. Try shaving fennel into a salad or roasting asparagus with a little olive oil and salt in a 400-degree oven for 5-7 minutes.
  2. Replace An Undesirable Habit with a Desirable One
The biggest reason why people fail when changing their diet is that they try to change everything at once. Rather than trying to eliminate sugar, wine, pasta, and chocolate from your diet all at once, work on replacing one undesirable habit with a more desirable one. Substitute your afternoon candy bar with raw almonds and dried fruit. OR replace your third cup of coffee with 16 ounces of water. OR measure out your serving of pasta and balance it with a double portion of vegetables. This method helps you develop a sustainable lifestyle without feeling deprived.
