There’s a lot of buzz lately about brain health – and well there should be. The brain is the hub for everything that happens within your body from moving your arms to pumping your heart. So how can you keep this marvelous, complex organ functioning as it should?
Glad you asked!
We’ve got the answers right here.
Diet
Just like any other part of the body, your brain benefits from the food you eat. A healthy diet rich in fresh leafy green vegetables, berries, green tea, and fatty fish like salmon all contribute to making your brain the healthiest, sharpest it can be.
It is best to go with whole, fresh foods, but if that is not a possibility, frozen is the next best thing. Look for foods rich in antioxidants, B vitamins, and omega 3 fatty acids.
Sleep
Studies show that more than 60% of American adults say that they are not sleeping enough or not getting enough restful sleep during the week. Sleep allows several restorative processes to take place in the brain. It can clear your mind and help you have more clarity and better function throughout the day.
Physical Activity
Physical activity does wonders for the brain as well as the body! It has been shown to improve cognitive processes in the brain and boost memory. It also has an anti-depressive effect and can help with pain management. The good news is you don’t have to work out for hours a week to reap the brain health benefit. Getting your heart rate up for 20 to 30 minutes a day, three days a week can help tremendously.
Mental Activity
Just as you exercise your body, you need to also exercise your brain. No matter your age, it is never too early or too late to begin engaging in mental activities to boost your brain function. Read a book, work a crossword puzzle, do some math problems, anything to get those wheels turning. Working on a jigsaw puzzle or working out brain teasers are great ways to keep your brain healthy and young.
If you are the creative sort, writing, painting, and other forms of art are also very good for brain function. Look for ways you can engage your mind instead of sitting mindlessly in front of the television.
Neurofeedback
Many people are discovering that neurofeedback is very good for brain health. It is a non-invasive, drug-free process that can change brainwave activity.
A computer monitors the brainwaves in real-time and the data gathered allows for the change in brainwave activity to occur. It is a positive behavior reward system that increases learning capabilities, improves memory, and helps keep the brain young.
